HVAC replacement cost in Atlanta

Published sources give different prices for an HVAC replacement in Atlanta. HVAC Project Cost says $4,800 to $13,500 for a full replacement in Atlanta (July 2026). HVAC.com says $10,600 to $13,700 for a 3-ton AC and furnace system in Georgia (July 2025). The first is a wide range for many system types, and the second is for one size, so they are not the same question.

What the sources say

HVAC Project Cost gives Atlanta prices by system type: central AC only at $4,550 to $7,000, a heat pump system at $5,000 to $10,000, a gas furnace plus AC at $7,000 to $13,500, and a ductless mini-split at $3,500 to $9,000. It puts a geothermal heat pump at $18,000 to $30,000. This site reads like a marketing site, so treat its numbers as one view.

HVAC.com covers Georgia and prices one size, 3 tons. A 3-ton AC and furnace system is $10,600 to $13,700. A 3-ton heat pump with air handler is $10,200 to $13,200. A 3-ton AC condenser with air handler is $9,800 to $12,800.

National figures for comparison

Bob Vila's national page gives $5,000 to $12,500 for a full HVAC unit replacement, with a national average of $7,500 (April 2024). This Old House's survey of homeowners puts a full system at $8,209 on average (September 2026).

Why the published figures differ

The Atlanta source covers many system types and home sizes in one wide range. The Georgia source prices one size only, 3 tons, so its range is narrower and higher. Those are different questions.

The dates differ too, and so do the kinds of source. Some are national surveys, some are local marketing pages. A bigger home needs a bigger unit. HVAC.com says to expect $400 to $700 for each half ton of size increase. Ductwork can add to the bill: HVAC Project Cost says repairs or replacement add $1,500 to $5,000 on top of its figures.

Your own quote should say the system type, the size and whether ductwork is included.

Licence and who to check

In Georgia, heating and cooling contractors are licensed by the Division of Conditioned Air Contractors, part of the Georgia Construction Industry Licensing Board, under the Secretary of State. The sources we read for this are a secondary guide, not the state's own pages, which we could not open. Confirm details with the state.

That guide says Class I licences are limited to systems up to 175,000 BTU of heating and 60,000 BTU of cooling, and Class II licences are unrestricted. It also says contractors must secure a $10,000 surety bond. Check this with the state before you rely on it.

To check a licence, use the Secretary of State's Professional Licensee Search, by contractor name or licence number.

Permits and rebates

We did not find permit rules for Atlanta, Alpharetta, Johns Creek or Milton. Ask your own city or county whether a permit is needed.

Georgia Power runs a residential HVAC programme with rebates. We could not read its page, so we list no amounts. Check the Georgia Power page and your electric membership company for what is open now.

Local Business America does not check licences, verify businesses or rank them. Please check the state's licence search yourself before you hire anyone.
