Thumbtack cost for contractors: when you are charged
Thumbtack charges per lead. Thumbtack staff say on the company's own forum that you are charged the moment the customer reaches out. A directory listing is a different thing: a page about your business at a flat price, or free, with no charge per contact. Below is what Thumbtack's staff say, then how a listing compares.
What Thumbtack says, in its own words
Each line is quoted from Thumbtack's own pages, as we read them in October 2026. Follow the link to see it in place.
You are charged when the customer first contacts you.
“You will be charged for a lead the moment the customer reaches out”
The charge happens at the point of connection.

What we could not read
Thumbtack's help centre and pricing pages did not load for us, so this page rests on two replies by Thumbtack staff on the company's own community forum. That is a thin base, and we would rather say so than fill the gap.
We found no published price for a Thumbtack lead and no refund rules on a page we could open. If you are weighing Thumbtack up, its help centre is the place to check both. Treat any lead price you see quoted elsewhere as one person's experience, not a list price.
What being charged at connection means
The staff replies say the charge comes when the customer reaches out, not when you win the job. So the cost follows the number of people who contact you, and some of those will not become customers. That is how pay-per-lead works on any platform.
Other ways to be found
A Google Business Profile is free and is the first thing to get right. It is what shows on the map when someone searches for your trade near them.
Your own website is the one place you fully control. Keep your name, address and phone number the same on it as everywhere else.
A local directory listing is a third. It is a page about your business in a guide to your town. Nothing is charged when someone contacts you from it.
How a Local Business America listing works
Every business in one of our guides has a free listing, with opening hours, a map and a link to its website. Claiming it is free.
Essentials is $19 a month and adds a photo gallery, an enquiry form, your Google reviews. Premium is $39 a month and adds a boost to the top of your category and a do-follow link to your website. The price is the same every month, and you can cancel any time.
A listing is not a lead service. We do not sell leads, we do not promise calls, and we cover a small number of areas so far. It is a page about your business in a guide to your town.
