How to check a contractor's licence in Utah
In Utah, the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) licenses contractors. DOPL's contracting page points to the Licensee Lookup & Verification System, where you can search by name or licence number. Local Business America does not check licences, verify businesses or rank them. Always check with the state yourself.
Researched October 2026, from the official sources named on this page. Rules change, so confirm with the board before you rely on them.
The steps
- 1
Ask for the licence details
Ask the contractor for their licence number and the exact name on the licence. The licence is issued to the business, so the business name matters.
- 2
Open the Utah lookup
Go to the state's Licensee Lookup & Verification System: https://secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html. DOPL's contracting page links to it as Verify a License.
- 3
Search by name or licence number
You can search by name and profession, or by licence number. A name search can match the start of a name or any part of it. For contractors, pick the CONTRACTOR profession.
- 4
Read the status
Check that the licence is active. A licence on probation shows as Active on Probation. If the result is not what you expected, call DOPL at (801) 530-6628.
- 5
Check the licence fits the job
Each licence has a classification. See the list below, and ask DOPL if you are not sure which one your job needs.
Who licenses contractors and where to look
DOPL is the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. It is part of the Utah Department of Commerce. Its contracting pages are at https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/contracting/.
The state's lookup is called Licensee Lookup & Verification System. Its page lists professions such as plumber types, electrician types and a CONTRACTOR category. The page shows the date its data is current to. Do not rely on a copy from another website.
Who needs a licence and the main classes
DOPL's FAQ points to the Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act and its rules for what kind of construction work needs a licence. It says to contact DOPL if you are not sure which classification applies.
DOPL lists these general contractor classifications: B100 General Contractor, R100 Residential/Small Commercial Contractor, E100 General Engineering Contractor, P200 General Plumbing Contractor, P201 Residential Plumbing Contractor, E200 General Electrical Contractor and E201 Residential Electrical Contractor. DOPL also names an H100 HVAC Contractor classification.
Specialty contractors have their own classifications, listed in the state's Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act Rule. DOPL says plumbing contractors must have a Master Plumber qualifier and electrical contractors must have a Master Electrical qualifier.
What to check on the result
A licence number search can show all licences held by one licensee. Check that the name is the person or business you are dealing with.
DOPL says licences are issued to the business, not to the owner or the qualifier. It also says business must be done in the name on the licence, though a registered DBA name can be added.
DOPL says a licence cannot be loaned or borrowed. The only legal way to work under a licence is as an officer or W-2 employee of the licensed contractor.
How to file a complaint
DOPL takes complaints online at https://services.dopl.utah.gov/. You can also download a paper form, or call (801) 530-6628. The page is called File a Complaint.
DOPL says complaints are not public information. It also says DOPL will not act as your lawyer or settle money disputes. If you lost money, it says to contact your own attorney.
What this site does and does not do
