Electrician cost in Southern California

Published sources do not agree on what an electrician costs. Homeyou says $35 to $100 an hour in San Diego (September 2026) and a usual job runs $922 to $1,319. For Orange County we found only job prices for single cities, not an hourly rate. The one California hourly figure we found is from Sacramento, not Southern California: TNT Electric, an electrical company, says $100 to $175 an hour (April 2026).

Researched October 2026. These are published estimates, not quotes. A price for your job comes from a local business.

What the sources say for San Diego

Homeyou says electricians in San Diego may charge $35 to $100 an hour, and a usual job runs $922 to $1,319.

We found no second opened page with a San Diego hourly rate, so we cannot say whether other sources agree. Homeyou does not fully explain how it works out its numbers.

What the sources say for Orange County

We did not find a published hourly rate made just for Orange County. Homeyou says a usual job costs $861 to $1,231 in Irvine. ServiceAgent, a directory of local businesses, says electrical work in the city of Orange runs from $140 to $5,200.

ServiceAgent gives a median of $295 for a small repair and $2,800 for a 200-amp panel upgrade in the city of Orange. These are two different kinds of figure, so do not set them side by side.

California and national figures

The only California hourly rate we found is for Sacramento, which is far from Southern California. TNT Electric, an electrical company, says a licensed journeyman electrician there charges $100 to $175 an hour, and $200 to $300 for emergency work.

For the whole country, Fixr says $70 to $131 an hour. HomeAdvisor says $50 to $130 an hour. These two are national figures, not California ones.

Service fees and why the numbers differ

HomeAdvisor says a service-call fee for the first hour is $100 to $200. Fixr says a service visit runs $176 to $327. Both are national. Ask each electrician about the call fee before the visit.

The sources cover different places and dates. Some are cost sites and some are companies that also want your work. Use the ranges to spot a quote that looks far off, not to guess an exact price.

Licences and how to check one

In California, electrical work is covered by the C-10 electrical contractor licence from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). It describes an electrical contractor as one who places, installs, erects or connects electrical wires, fixtures, appliances and similar parts.

To check a licence, use the CSLB's online Check a License page. You can search by licence number or business name. You can also call (800) 321-CSLB (2752). Contractors must put their licence number on business cards, bids and contracts. A written contract is required for home improvement projects over $500.

Local Business America does not check licences, verify businesses or rank them. Please check the CSLB yourself before you hire anyone.
