Herriman
Herriman is a city in southwestern Salt Lake County, Utah. It stayed a small community for well over a century and then grew very fast. It had 55,144 people at the 2020 census, up from 1,523 in 2000.
Where is Herriman, and what is it like?
Herriman is in the southwest part of Salt Lake County and is part of the Salt Lake City metro area. The name is said HERR-ih-mən. The city covers 23.1 square miles, all of it land. Riverton is on the east, South Jordan is to the north, and Bluffdale is to the southeast.
Herriman is one of the fastest growing places in Utah. It was the 111th largest city or town in the state in 2000 and the 14th largest in 2020. It was a town in 2000, and state law now ranks it as a city of the third class.
The 2020 census shows a very young place. The median age was 26.5 years. About 37.8 percent of residents were under 18, and only 4.2 percent were 65 or older. There were 15,360 households. Of those, 59.5 percent had children under 18, and 69.6 percent were married couples. In 2010 there were 21,785 people, and the median age then was 24.7.
How did Herriman begin?
Herriman was settled in 1851 by Henry Harriman, Thomas Jefferson Butterfield, John Jay Stocking and Robert Cowan Petty. They built a fort on the spot where the community garden is today. Two black locust trees near the entrance to the old fort are all that is left of it.
For well over a century Herriman stayed small. In 1999 concerned neighbors went door to door with a petition to make the community a town. A year earlier, in 1998, Rose Creek Estates had become the first subdivision.
How did Herriman grow so fast?
A land developer called Rosecrest held rights to a large area around Herriman and began building homes on a large scale. In 2007 about 4,000 acres moved out of neighboring Bluffdale and into Herriman, which opened up more room for housing. The growth is what turned the town into a city.
The city keeps adding land on both its west and east sides. The newest annexation, in 2022, brought in the 933 acre Olympia housing area on the west side.
Herriman has also faced fire danger on its southern edge. On September 19, 2010, a National Guard exercise at Camp Williams, to the south, started a wildfire that burned 3,500 acres. Firefighters stopped it, but three homes were destroyed. More than 1,200 homes were told to leave, and most people were back by September 21.
What are Herriman's schools and sports like?
All of Herriman's public schools are run by the Jordan School District. The city has two high schools. Herriman High School opened in 2010 and Mountain Ridge High School opened in 2019. Herriman has two middle schools, Fort Herriman and Copper Mountain, and several elementary schools. Juniper Elementary serves grades 4 to 6 and was built to ease crowding at Ridge View.
Herriman High School cost $75 million to build and sits on a 50 acre campus with views of the valley and mountains. Its mascot, the mustang, comes from the wild mustang horses that once roamed the southwest corner of the valley. Its boys rugby team has been ranked among the best in the country and won national titles more than once, most recently in 2021. The football team won the 5A state title in 2015.
Herriman also has charter schools, including Providence Hall and Athlos Academy.
Herriman is home to the Zions Bank Real Academy, a soccer complex that is the training base for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. The complex has Zions Bank Stadium, which seats 5,000. Real Monarchs, the club's MLS Next Pro team, plays there.
How does the city run its services?
Herriman handles most of its own services, including police, water, animal services and roads. It contracts with outside groups for power, trash and recycling, natural gas, sewer and fire protection, and the Unified Fire Authority covers fires.
The city also has a number of volunteer groups. They include the Herriman Historical Committee, Be Ready Herriman, the Herriman Arts Council, the Herriman Trails Committee, the Herriman Youth Council and Healthy Herriman.
