Kumeyaay history in the area goes back about 7,000 years. In 1823 the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos, described as the first rancho in present-day San Diego County. One league, or 4,243 acres, went to Captain Francisco María Ruiz, a commandant of the Presidio of San Diego.
The ranch lay on a wagon road from San Diego toward Warner's Ranch. From 1857 to 1860 it was also a station on the San Antonio and San Diego Mail Line. An adobe home built here in the early 1820s has been restored and is run by the County of San Diego.
How did the ranch become a neighborhood?
The ranch operated until 1962. That year the developer Irvin Kahn bought a parcel of 14,000 acres for a planned community. In 1964 the City of San Diego annexed most of the area.
The preserve lies along the southern edge of the community.
