Where is Alpharetta, and what is it like?

Alpharetta sits in northern Fulton County and belongs to the Atlanta metropolitan area. Downtown is 26 miles north of downtown Atlanta. The city covers 27.3 square miles, almost all of it land, and the 2020 census counted 65,818 people living in 24,727 households. The median age was 39.7, and 36.5% of households had children under 18 living in them.

Four neighbors touch the city limits. Johns Creek is to the southeast, Roswell to the south and west, and Milton to the north. To the northeast is unincorporated land in Forsyth County. The climate is humid subtropical, and the city falls in USDA hardiness zone 7b.

It is a car suburb with a walkable center. The easiest way in from Atlanta is GA 400, which is also U.S. 19, and exits 9, 10 and 11 all lead into the city. Exit 11 drops onto Windward Parkway, the road most people use to reach the shopping and the offices.

How did Alpharetta begin?

In the 1830s the Cherokee people in Georgia were forced west to the Indian Territory, in present-day Oklahoma, under the Indian Removal Act. Farmers and pioneers moved onto the emptied land along an old Cherokee trail that ran from the North Georgia mountains down to the Chattahoochee River. One of the first lasting landmarks was the New Prospect Camp Ground, also called the Methodist Camp Ground, beside a natural spring near what is now downtown. It later worked as a trading post where settlers swapped goods.

The place was known as the town of Milton until July 1858. The city of Alpharetta was chartered on December 11, 1858, with its boundary drawn as a circle of 0.5 miles around the courthouse. It was the county seat of Milton County until 1931, when Milton County was folded into Fulton County to avoid bankruptcy during the Great Depression.

Nobody is sure where the name comes from. One idea is that it echoes Alfarata, a fictional Indian girl in a song called The Blue Juniata. Another is that it comes from alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The local museum admits that nobody knows what the retta part means.

The earliest settlers were mostly Methodists and Baptists who farmed, milled, blacksmithed, built and dug ditches. Local men fought in the Civil War or served in the home guard. Union forces never pushed north of Roswell, which lies roughly six miles to the southwest. The Simeon and Jane Rucker Log House, built in 1833, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

What do people do for work in Alpharetta?

Technology and finance carry the local economy. The city began investing in optical fiber in the 1980s and now hosts several data centers. In 2019 the fintech industry around Atlanta pushed data center growth in Alpharetta, though by 2024 state rules and local zoning were slowing further expansion. Cynergy Data is headquartered here, as was NetBank while it existed.

The city set up an advisory group in 2012 that is now called Tech North Atlanta, formerly Tech Alpharetta. It is an independent nonprofit that holds monthly events for technology executives and runs a startup incubator, the Tech Alpharetta Innovation Center. By early 2020 about ten companies had graduated from the incubator and were hiring across North Fulton County.

Shopping and mixed-use districts are spread across the city. Avalon is an 86-acre development that opened in 2014. North Point Mall is a traditional mall that is set for redevelopment, and it is home to the only American Girl Boutique and Bistro in the Southeast. West Windward Parkway is lined with big stores, while East Windward Parkway is mostly neighborhoods. Halcyon opened in 2019 and has an Alpharetta mailing address, but it sits in Forsyth County, outside the city limits.

The Maxwell, another downtown building, has 37,000 square feet of space for entertainment, restaurants and health and wellness businesses.

In all, downtown has over 600 businesses, including a hotel, boutiques, fitness studios and coffee shops. The Mansell House and Gardens, a Queen Anne style home from 1912, is used for events and is the home of the Alpharetta Historical Society. A weekly farmers market runs in the downtown area from April to October, and Atlanta magazine named it the Best Saturday Morning Excursion in 2007.

What is Avalon in Alpharetta?

Avalon is a mixed-use development on an 86-acre site, and it is the newest big piece of the Alpharetta skyline. The first phase has 500,000 square feet of retail, a 12-screen movie theater, 105,000 square feet of office space built over the shops, 101 single-family houses and 250 luxury rental homes. It opened in October 2014 and pulled shoppers away from North Point Mall.

The site had a false start. It was first meant to be called Prospect Park, and construction stalled there in 2008. In 2011 the land was sold to North American Properties, the company that also runs Atlantic Station in Atlanta. The Alpharetta City Council approved the project in April 2012, work began on January 28, 2013, and the opening was celebrated with events from October 29 to November 2, 2014.

The second phase was approved on October 28, 2014 and opened in April 2017. It added 90,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, two office buildings with 550,000 square feet between them, 276 multi-family units and a hotel and conference center with 325 rooms and 45,000 square feet of meeting space. The stores lean upscale, and a few of them have no other location within several hundred miles of Atlanta.

What is the story of North Point Mall?

North Point Mall is a shopping mall in Alpharetta that opened on October 20, 1993, as one of the largest malls in the country. Homart Development Company announced it on April 20, 1989, with plans for 400,000 square feet of leasable space and 120 to 140 stores. A sixth anchor store was added in 1995, along with a new parking deck, and a major renovation in 2003 modernized the interior.

The carousel in the food court has its own history. It was built in Brooklyn by the Fabricon Carousel Company, and its hand-painted fiberglass animals copy those of a vintage Victorian carousel on Coney Island. It reached Atlanta in December 1992, meant for Perimeter Mall, and sat in a warehouse near Duluth for eight months. A broken part kept it from running until a few weeks after the mall opened. It closed in March 2020 and reopened in November 2023.

The mall has been in flux since Avalon arrived. Its Sears store closed in 2018. In February 2019 the city council approved an 83-acre redevelopment with apartments, restaurants, small parks and a lake, but that plan fell through. The mall was sold in March 2022. In March 2024 a group led by former National Hockey League player Anson Carter proposed rebuilding the site around an arena, and in late February 2026 the owners agreed to a redevelopment deal with a real estate firm and a sports developer.

What are the Big Creek Greenway and the amphitheatre?

The Big Creek Greenway follows Big Creek, which was once called Vickery Creek. Its first completed section starts at Big Creek Park in Roswell and runs 8 miles to Marconi Drive in Alpharetta. A second section in Forsyth County starts at McFarland Parkway and runs 11 miles. When it is finished the trail will be 12 feet wide and link Roswell, Alpharetta and Cumming. Access points in Alpharetta include Rock Mill Park on Kimball Bridge Road, North Point Parkway and Haynes Bridge Road.

The Ameris Bank Amphitheatre opened in 2008 as the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra played the opening show on May 10, 2008. The name changed to Verizon Amphitheatre in January 2017, and Ameris Bank bought the naming rights in December 2018. Beyond concerts by popular artists, it hosts comedians and themed symphony nights.

How did Georgia 400 shape Alpharetta?

Georgia 400 is a freeway that runs from Atlanta to just south of Dahlonega, and from I-285 north it is also U.S. 19. Planning began in 1954 under the names North Fulton Expressway and Appalachian Developmental Highway. The first section north of I-285 was dedicated on May 24, 1971, and more of it opened in stages through 1981. Fulton County public works director Turner McDonald led the early work, and the stretch north of the Perimeter carries the name Turner McDonald Parkway.

Growth followed the road. In the late 1980s it was widened from four lanes to eight between I-285 and Holcomb Bridge Road, and to six between Holcomb Bridge Road and Haynes Bridge Road, because of the growth the freeway itself had brought to northern Fulton and southern Forsyth counties. From Mansell Road at exit 8 to Windward Parkway at exit 11, North Point Parkway runs beside it and leads to North Point Mall.
