How did Chula Vista begin?
People have lived in the area for about 10,000 years. The Kumeyaay lived here for centuries and had a village called Chiap. Spanish explorers claimed the land in the 1500s, and a 1795 land grant called Rancho del Rey covered the area. After Mexican independence the land was divided into ranchos, starting in 1829.
The San Diego Land and Town Company developed the town. The first house went up in 1887 and ten houses were finished by 1889. A dam completed in 1888 brought irrigation water for farming. Chula Vista became a major lemon-growing centre, and in 1911 the city had 15,000 acres (61 km2) of farmland, including 4,000 acres (16 km2) of lemon groves.
Voters approved incorporation on October 17, 1911, and the state approved it in November. The city's incorporation date is listed as November 28, 1911. In January 1916 the Lower Otay Dam failed after heavy rain and the Hatfield Flood swept through the valley.
How did Chula Vista grow into a large city?
The city bought its airport in November 1940 for Rohr Aircraft. Rohr moved to Chula Vista in early 1941 and employed 11,000 people at its peak, making power units for the B-24 Liberator bomber. The population rose from 5,138 in 1940 to 15,927 in 1950.
The city's borders grew in steps. The first expansion came in 1949. Part of Bonita was annexed in the 1960s. In 1985 the city made what is described as the largest annexation in California history, which brought in areas such as Castle Park and Otay. Montgomery was annexed in January 1986.
Building then moved east. Eastlake began in 1986, Rancho del Rey was established in 1989, and Otay Ranch began construction in 1999 on 23,000 acres (93 km2). The 2000 census counted 173,556 people, and the 2010 census counted 243,916.
What parts of Chula Vista are there?
West Chula Vista is the original city area, west of Hilltop Drive and north of L Street. Montgomery lies south of L Street. These are the older neighborhoods, closest to the bay and Interstate 5.
East Chula Vista holds the newer planned communities. Eastlake was built around an artificial lake starting in 1986, and its name is often used for the wider State Route 125 corridor. Rancho del Rey, Otay Ranch and Millenia are also in the east. Eastlake and Otay Ranch have their own sections in this guide.
