Brookhaven is a city in western DeKalb County, Georgia, in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta, with a population of 55,161 at the 2020 census.
Where is Brookhaven, and what is it like?
Brookhaven sits in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta, in the western part of DeKalb County. It was formerly called North Atlanta. The 2020 census counted 55,161 people. After Stonecrest, it is the second-largest city that lies wholly inside DeKalb County.
The city covers 11.86 square miles, of which 11.73 square miles is land and 0.12 square miles is water. Interstate 285 runs along its northern border, and Interstate 85 passes its southeastern edge.
Brookhaven is made up of several distinct areas. Brookhaven Village is a town center on Dresden Drive, just east of the MARTA station. Lynwood Park is a neighborhood that was historically African-American. Along the southern edge, the Buford Highway corridor has dense housing and a large international population, with a wide range of restaurants and shops.
How did Brookhaven begin?
The Creek people lived in this part of Georgia before European settlers arrived. John Evins started a plantation in the area around 1810, and the Goodwin family owned land here from the 1830s. The Goodwin home and family graveyard are preserved near Peachtree Road and Dresden Drive.
The railroad shaped the first settlements. A station called Goodwin's was built on the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line railway in 1873. About a mile north along the line, the settlement of Cross Keys had roughly 250 residents in 1876, and Nancy's Creek powered a local mill.
How did the city take its present form?
In 1910, buyers took 150 acres north of Peachtree Road for a planned community built around a golf course. The nine-hole course opened in 1912 and grew to eighteen holes in 1915. The Capital City Club became a local landmark, and the Capital City Country Club area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The area was incorporated as North Atlanta in 1924. It was disincorporated in 1965, after a referendum held in 1963. The MARTA Brookhaven/Oglethorpe station opened in 1984.
The present city is much newer. Voters approved incorporation in a referendum on July 31, 2012, with 55 percent in favor, and the city officially incorporated on December 17, 2012. Its name comes from the historic Brookhaven neighborhood, most of which lies inside Atlanta.

Town Brookhaven is a mixed-use district of about 600,000 square feet on 54 acres, which opened in 2010. It sits on Peachtree Road next to Oglethorpe University.

The first phase of the Peachtree Creek Greenway is a trail of about 1.3 miles from North Druid Hills to Briarwood Road. It opened on December 12, 2019.

Public elementary schools include Ashford Park, Montclair, Montgomery and Woodward. Chamblee Middle and Sequoyah Middle serve middle school students. High school students attend Cross Keys High or Chamblee Charter High. Kittredge Magnet School serves grades 4 to 6.
