Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Springs is a city in Utah County, Utah, on the northwestern shore of Utah Lake, with a population of 37,696 at the 2020 census.
Where is Saratoga Springs, and what is it like?
Saratoga Springs sits on the northwestern shore of Utah Lake, at an elevation of 4,547 feet (1,386 m). It is part of the Provo-Orem metropolitan area. The city is a narrow strip running north and south between Utah Lake and the Jordan River on the east, with the foothills of the Lake Mountains to the west.
It runs from Pelican Point on the west side of Utah Lake north for about 11 miles to Camp Williams, a US Army facility. The city covers about 23.36 square miles, and a small share of that is water, mostly part of Utah Lake.
How did Saratoga Springs begin?
The city is named after Saratoga Springs, New York. Natural hot springs near the source of the Jordan River inspired a resort called Beck's Saratoga Springs. The Beck family opened it in 1884, and John Beck used it as the family residence.
The resort drew tourists and had lodges and amusement facilities, which were later removed. Private redevelopment added an outdoor pool, a clubhouse, a bowery and a kitchen for groups.
How did Saratoga Springs become a city?
In the early 1990s, landowners sought incorporation because Utah County's land development rules were not urban enough for their plans. Saratoga Springs was incorporated on December 31, 1997, and became a city on May 31, 2001.
The city runs under a manager-by-ordinance form of government. A professional manager, appointed by the City Council, runs daily operations.
How fast has Saratoga Springs grown?
The census counted 1,003 people in 2000 and 17,781 in 2010. By 2020 the count was 37,696. The median age in 2020 was 24.3, and 42.7 percent of residents were under 18.
There were 9,317 households, and 67.0 percent had children under 18. Married-couple households made up 80.0 percent of the total, and 96.9 percent of residents lived in urban areas.
What is Saratoga Springs known for?
The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was announced on April 2, 2017. It held an open house from April to July 2023 and was dedicated on August 13, 2023.
The city library is unusual. It began as a mostly volunteer effort, with $10,000 in seed money authorized by the City Council in 2010. The council approved a full-time library in 2013, and it opened full-time hours on January 1, 2014. By August 2022 it had over 8,000 cardholders and more than 24,000 items.
